How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Uncertain how to check your car’s oil? Many newer models have replaced traditional dipsticks with electronic oil monitoring systems. We encourage you to consult your owner’s manual for precise instructions. Nevertheless, we here at Mauer Main Chevrolet have provided you with our own general instructions if you choose to check your oil manually:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground and that the engine is turned off and cold.
  2. Open the vehicle’s hood and find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the level is.

Why Check Your Vehicle’s Oil Levels?

Knowing how to check your car’s oil level is critical to your vehicle’s performance on Champlin roads. Oil changes are generally recommended at least twice a year, however, those metrics can vary based on your model and driving habits. Your oil should be checked at least once per month. Routine oil inspections allow you to keep an eye out for leaks before they lead to costly maintenance malfunctions. If you ever notice the following warning signs:

  • Steam billowing out from under the hood of your vehicle
  • Your car’s hood is hot to the touch

You may potentially have an oil leak and your engine is overheating. In that case, you’ll want to schedule service at our Anoka Auto Center immediately.
